UDOT OS/OW
Utah oversize is UDOT. Grades and weather on I-15 and I-80 are Utah routing.
Chains
A census address in Salt Lake does not prove chains or the truck that will show.
Utah DMV / IRP
IRP and IFTA sit with DMV. L&I remains the federal filing.
49 CFR 387.9
Mountain restrictions are UDOT, not a federal BI&PD row. Confirm L&I anyway.

grades and chains are utah routing

Open-deck machinery headed north or south on I-15 needs a permit plan and a chain plan when UDOT requires it. A load-board Salt Lake hotshot tag is not that plan. Ask trailer type, loaded height, and whether they already hold the UDOT permit.

A Salt Lake drop can be Wyoming, Idaho, or Nevada the same day. Read authority type. Intrastate Utah is not enough for a load that leaves the state. Neighbor-state paper from Wyoming or Nevada does not cover Utah miles.

Call the census telephone. A Salt Lake dispatcher LLC on the rate con is a name match. Weather holds are a cover call. They are not an Unsatisfactory rating and not a reason to skip L&I. If they swap trucks because of a storm, confirm you are still on the same MC.

FMCSA vs Utah

An Active FMCSA property MC is interstate operating authority. It is not a Utah oversize permit, not IRP, not IFTA, and not intrastate authority. If this load never leaves Utah, ask whether they have the state credential — and still match legal name on L&I if an MC is on the rate con.

As of September 2026, table 1 to 49 CFR 387.9 still lists $750,000, $1,000,000, and $5,000,000. The January 16, 2026 change is broker/freight-forwarder BMC-84/85 at $75,000 — your house, not the truck. The March 2026 FMCSA notice still says: do not buy or sell a USDOT or MC outside a real corporate deal.

UCR is a separate annual filing. It is not BMC-91 and not a UT OS/OW permit. Confirm UCR on the national UCR site if your process requires it. Then come back to L&I for the truck.

Utah permits and credentials

Utah OS/OW is UDOT. Grades and weather on I-15/I-80 are Utah routing.

Utah IRP/IFTA is DMV. L&I remains the federal filing.

Attach the UDOT permit for Utah miles. Write the chain plan when UDOT requires it. Neighbor-state paper from Wyoming, Idaho, or Nevada does not cover Utah miles.

first-touch in Utah

  • Do legal name, USDOT, and MC on the rate con match L&I?
  • If this route uses I-15 or I-80 mountain corridors, what is the chain and permit plan?
  • If oversize, is a UDOT permit in hand for these miles?
  • Does the census telephone reach this motor carrier?
  • If the load leaves Utah, is authority interstate?

fail closed

  • Oversize Utah miles with no UDOT permit.
  • Office cannot describe chains or an alternate route when UDOT holds the corridor.
  • Wyoming or Nevada miles treated as covered by a Utah permit only, or the reverse.
  • MC swapped in a storm without a new L&I pull.

direct answers

Does an Active MC replace a UDOT mountain permit?
No. Operating authority is federal. Oversize, overweight, and some mountain routing are UDOT. Confirm L&I, then the permit.
Is a Salt Lake weather hold a safety rating?
No. It is a cover-timing decision. You still match identity and insurance. Do not skip L&I because the pass is restricted.
Can I cover Utah miles on a Wyoming WYDOT PDF only?
No. Wyoming paper does not cover Utah miles. Confirm L&I, then UDOT.
