If your rate con or inbox thread gives you an MC docket number instead of a USDOT number, do not paste MC digits into this tool. To search MC numbers, use MC number lookup.
USDOT numbers and MC dockets overlap in numeric ranges. A 7-digit integer can be a valid USDOT for one carrier and an active MC docket for a completely different company. Searching MC numbers in a DOT check pulls the wrong census record. Use MC number lookup to resolve authority dockets, or carrier name search if you only have a company name.
use a USDOT, not an MC
A DOT lookup is the first look — not the booking decision. You get legal name, phone, flags, fleet counts, dockets, and cargo carried from the census record, then open Licensing & Insurance for the filing check.
A USDOT number is the company's census identity in FMCSA systems. It is not, by itself, permission to haul your interstate load.
Operating authority lives on an MC / MX / FF docket in Licensing & Insurance (L&I). If the email thread only gives an MC, use MC number lookup.
Private carriers can hold a USDOT and no for-hire MC. Brokers can hold a docket that is not motor-carrier authority. If L&I shows only broker authority as Active, they may arrange transportation. They are not the motor carrier on your rate confirmation.

If a field is blank on the census, treat it as blank — not as “unknown but fine.”

Before you cover, open L&I for the docket and check:
- Authority type and status — property common or property contract Active for this interstate lane. Broker-only is not motor-carrier authority.
- BOC-3 — process agents on file (49 CFR Part 366). Missing or rejected → do not cover on a promise.
- BI&PD filing — usually BMC-91 / BMC-91X (or BMC-82 trust in lieu). Read amount, insurer, and any cancellation effective before pickup.
- Pending cancellations — a COI in your inbox is not the FMCSA filing.
When SAFER / census and L&I disagree on authority or insurance, believe L&I. Write which system you opened and the time.

- Run the USDOT here. Copy legal name, phone, DOT, and any MC shown.
- Open L&I. Confirm Active motor-carrier property authority, BOC-3, and required BI&PD.
- Match legal name (or listed DBA), DOT, and MC on the rate confirmation — including Inc vs LLC.
- Call the census telephone, not the cell in the email signature. Ask them to state the legal name and DOT.
- Save dated screens with the load file.
Stop when a step fails. An Active BMC-91 does not repair a broker-only docket. A matching rate con does not repair a missing BOC-3.

You do not have a name match. Inc and LLC are different legal persons. Call the census landline. Ask for the W-9 that matches L&I. Do not send a rate con that names a company that is not on the docket.

- L&I is not Active for property motor-carrier authority on this lane
- BOC-3 missing or rejected
- Required BI&PD filing missing, or cancellation effective before pickup
- Rate con name or entity type does not match FMCSA
- Census phone reaches a different company or nobody who will state the DOT
- The only Active line is broker or freight-forwarder authority
